RESTORE OUR EARTH

Today, Indonesian producer Rani Jambak and Berlin-based, American vocalist Lyra Pramuk release “Restore,” a new collaborative single and music video reflecting each artist’s individual practice and cultural background into a unique, musical vision. The release coincides with Earth Day 2021, and is meant to correspond with the 2021 Earth Day theme, Restore Our Earth.

“Restore” was produced collaboratively this past winter over back-and-forth digital studio sessions and Zoom calls as part of the Goethe-Institut’s Virtual Partner Residency program.

“This piece represents our shared commitment to raise awareness about the ongoing environmental atrocities taking place in our world every day,” says Rani Jambak, “and we felt that Earth Day 2021 was the perfect time to release this. Every sale of our single on Bandcamp will be donated directly to the Environmental Education Centre (PPLH) Bohorok, a non-profit Environmental Education Program and Nature Conservation Centre located in the Bohorok district of North Sumatra, Indonesia.”

Lyra Pramuk continues: “With this project, we hope to bring international attention to the mission and activities of the Environmental Education Centre (PPLH) Bohorok. We hope that individuals all over the world will enjoy and purchase our track, which will directly support the ongoing activities of the PPLH. More generally, we hope that our collaboration will stand as a powerful symbol for the potential of contemporary music culture to empower and heal across different cultures and traditions.”

“Restore” combines aspects of Indonesian and Western musical traditions within a more globalised and fluid approach to electronic music production. Rani Jambak began by sampling traditional Sumatran instruments to form the spine of the piece. Then, Lyra Pramuk responded by layering different styles of vocal recordings to form an intoxicating, natural choir. The collaboration feels like the forest coming to life. “We want to build a piece of music that reflects our hearts, that could show our deep hope for the environment and our dedication to its health,” Rani says.

Today the artists also release a music video for their track that highlights the breathtaking natural landscapes and vibrant wildlife of the Leuser Ecosystem, a tropical rainforest covering 2.6 million hectares in the provinces of Aceh and North Sumatra on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Leuser Ecosystem is also the home of the Sumatran orangutan, a critically endangered species that plays a vital role in the tropical rainforest ecosystem.

Statement from the Environmental Education Centre Bohorok:

“Environmental education and environmental awareness activities are still important for society today. Dynamic global life and rapid technological developments continue to threaten the environment, which is increasingly out of control due to activities carried out by humans ourselves, natural damage, deforestation, hunting of animals, damage to marine ecosystems due to accumulation of garbage, and others that have occurred directly in front of our eyes.

This intercontinental collaborative musical work by Rani Jambak & Lyra Pramuk is a strong sign and reminder for all the people of the earth who must be determined together to save the earth from the damage caused by sustained global warming.

In the commemoration moment of Earth Day 2021, we are still faced with the COVID-19 pandemic, which has almost changed the order of human life. The Restore Our Earth theme is an invitation to all people on Earth to be wiser in taking all actions related to nature and the environment. Together, we can prevent catastrophic climate change and environmental damage. Together, we can Restore our Earth.

One of them is by providing indirect support for earth-saving actions that can be done in various ways, such as supporting musical works as well as donating for forest saving activities and raising public awareness. This is so that people's behavior and attitudes can bring more care to our environment, and provide awareness of the importance of protecting the environment so that it becomes a personal and sustainable agenda.”
